okahandja 2

hello from Namibia!

I've just sent you another e-mail that I wrote last week. I accidentally sent it to the wrong group so y'all didn't receive it. This is my second week in Okahandja now, and things are still going good. My friend, Jenna, tore a ligament in her ankle yesterday playing soccor and I'm waiting for her to come back from Windhoek to see what impact that will have on her volunteer status, if any.

I am learning Oshindonga, one of the 13 languages spoken here in Namibia. I now know that I will be assigned to the the Ovumbu region, which is in the very northern part of Namibia, near the Angola border. I have taught 6 or 7 other volunteers how to play Mahjong! Ammon, your typed up instructions for the game have come in very handy. A couple of my friends are so obsessed with mahjong, I am getting less and less sleep because they want to play late into the night.

we have not had any rain whatsoever, but I am JUST NOW hearing some thunder and it is cloudy, so maybe we'll get rain tonight! Exciting! It is very hot and dry here. when I first came here I was drinking 5 liters of water a day, but now I've adjusted and I'm only drinking 3 liters a day.

If you'd like to call me cheaper, my friend, Liz has been looking into phone cards to Namibia, and she found one that will cost you only 9 cents min to Namibia and 13 cents if it is to Namibia on a cell phone. I don't have a cell phone yet, but I'm thinking of getting one. You can go read about the cards at Liz's website:

I hope you are all doing well. remember to write me if you get a chance! I'm slowly writing letters to everyone, hopefully I'll get around to you soon. Mom, eric, and anna, thanks for the long e-mail, I'll respond in postal mail. Lisa, likewise.

ciao, siggi
